The 440 South Church office building makes an ideal work place for the growing downtown Charlotte business community. Situated in a revitalized area with new museums, park space and residential. 440 South Church embraces the urban environment.
The building design opens out to the street sidewalks and activates it with retail and cafes with outdoor seating. The 15-story office tower is the second component to an entire city block redevelopment with 1000+ car parking deck and a 450-unit residential tower.
The building exterior is a composition of three materials in two types of expressions. The more dramatic accentuates the two corner entrances on either end of the building. This is a curtain wall extending the full height of the building, composed of full-height silver gray glass and champagne color metal panels spandrels. This is carried across the roof penthouse and connects the two building entries. One entrance is at the corner of South Church and West 1st Street, the other is interior to the block linking the parking deck.
The second façade expression is a rhythm of vertical cream-colored precast concrete panels layered over the same full-height glass and metal spandrel panels of the corner features. The resulting composition of the two emphases the vertical lines making the building appear taller and reaching toward the sky.
To complete the entire building design composition, additional features are incorporated at the lower three floors to establish a base and give greater interest at the pedestrian level. First there is a change in the precast color to a dark hue with more texture and exposed aggregate showing. The first two floors of glass openings are recessed and capped with a horizontal aluminum projecting eyebrow. Each building entry features an extending cantilevered canopy made of metal and glass. And finally to tie the building to its surrounding, the outdoor pedestrian areas are delineated and accented with natural stone-faced planters tree lined streets and decorative street lighting.
